Xunantunich Mayan Ruins is located in the Cayo District, in the village of San Jose Succotz.
These Mayan Temples where classic period ceremonial centers.
The tallest pyramid is El Castillo which is 130 feet above the plaza square, making it the tallest building in Belize.
The lower temple is famous for its large Stucco Frieze, a mask with large ears that probably represent the sun God. Next to the mask is a moon sign representing Venus.
The core of the Mayan Site occupies 300 square meters, but the whole periphery covers several square miles.
From the top of the pyramid the views are breath taking, seeing the valleys of Belize & Guatemala.
As you visit the temples listen to your guides about the history of the site and the Mayan people that once inhabited Xunantunich Mayan Ruins.
